How this is worked out
  • The mortgage payment is held to a third of take-home pay, minus your other loan payments — close to what many European lenders use. Your bank decides; this shows where you stand.
  • The top price is the mortgage plus your savings, after the purchase costs you set.
  • “Owning, all in” adds 1% of the price a year for upkeep. Property tax and insurance vary too much to guess — add them to the comparison yourself.
  • The ten-year chart assumes the price doesn't move and your rent doesn't rise.
