New consumer loans, Ireland, August 2026: 7.3% on average.

Averages of last month's new loans, from the European Central Bank. They are not offers: your rate depends on you, the loan and the bank, and older loans were priced in a different market.

Crossed out: it breaks one of your limits.

The least interest is not always the best choice: a bigger down payment empties savings you may need.

What the car is worth against what you oweA rough line: we count the car as losing 15% of its value each year. Real cars lose more in the first year.

Options you may not know

  • Loan or leasing

With a loan the car is yours from the first day. With financial leasing it becomes yours after the last instalment; with operating leasing you hand it back. Compare the total you pay, including any final payment — not only the monthly figure.

  • Pay cash, or put more down

Everything you put down saves its interest. But keep enough savings for a few months of bills: a cheaper loan is not worth an empty account.

  • A shorter loan

Higher payments, less interest — and you sooner owe less than the car is worth.

  • Low payments with a big final payment

A balloon loan looks cheap each month because part of the price waits until the end. You pay interest on that part the whole time, and you need the lump sum, or a new loan, when it falls due.

Level 3 — exact, in Fyncora

Fyncora keeps this answer true.

Save the car as a goal with its own budget. Fyncora checks it against your real accounts and bills every month — and tells you early if the car starts to squeeze.

How this is worked out
  • The payment uses the standard fixed-rate formula: the same amount every month until the loan is repaid. A final payment is taken out of what the monthly payments repay.
  • The grid repeats that calculation for a down payment one step lower and one higher, and for the loan lengths either side of yours.
  • The value line takes 15% off the car's value each year. It is a rough guide, not a valuation.
  • Market averages are the European Central Bank's bank interest rate statistics for new consumer loans, by country. They are interest rates without fees.
  • “Tight” means the loan and running costs take more than a fifth of your take-home pay. “Doesn't fit” means your month no longer closes.
  • Guidance, not financial advice. The same calculation runs inside Fyncora on your real numbers.
